A download count is not proof the thing was worth buying

Somebody about to pay for a digital product, a template, a preset pack, a guide, has no way to know if it is actually useful before they buy it, since there is nothing to hold or try first. A download count means nothing if half the people who bought it never opened the file. A review from somebody who actually used what they bought is the only proof that exists for something that is just a file.

When to ask

A few days after buying, once they have actually used what they downloaded.

Send the link then, not in a follow-up a month later. A review is written in the mood the buyer is in when they get the link, and that is the mood you want on the page.

What to ask

The form has one box, and what goes in it depends on what you asked. These get an answer a stranger can use. “Great seller” does not.

  • What did you buy, and what did you use it for?
  • Did it do what the listing said it would?
  • What would you tell somebody deciding whether to buy it?

What lands on your page

An example, written to show the shape. The name, the tags and the verified mark come from the reviewer and the link they used, and nothing shows until you approve it.

Example

Bought the preset pack expecting to tweak everything myself and honestly two of them worked straight out of the box on my wedding shoots.
Ines, Bought a Lightroom preset pack

Worth knowing

Send the link in the same email the download link goes out in. That is the only moment you know for sure the buyer is looking at their inbox.
